The 2013 National Portrait Prize
just a few finalist photographs that really stood out

'Yonnie and Indiana'
By Janelle Low
FIRST PRIZE

Artists Caption:
I met Yhonnie Scarce through the Dianne Tanzer Gallery in 2011 and have had the privilege of documenting her work ever since. When Indiana's health took a turn for the worse, just short of her 19th birthday, Yhonnie made a personal request that I capture a portrait of them together.

 'Granny's 90th'
By Katherine Bennett

Artists Caption:
Granny Thelma's 90th – the ladies are waiting for me to take their ‘formal’ photo.

'Ivan and Lillian'
By margot Sharman

Artists Caption:
Ivan and Lillian Movitz were at a function where I was the photographer. They were there to support their son who was to be one of the presenters. In an environment full of young entrepreneurs, Ivan and Lillian were sitting patiently waiting together, interested in the activities occurring around them and comfortable within the company of each other. This photo shows a partnership of love, friendship and support in modern Australia.

'James'
By Myles Nelson

Artists Caption:
I am fascinated by the ways people interact in art galleries and how these spaces can provide possibilities for human contact.  James Maxwell embodies such a moment as he waits for his date and his patience fades.

'Becky feeding Hazel'
By Louise Allerton

Artists Caption:
Becky Windlass is from the Great Victoria Desert in Western Australia. Her parents lived through the atomic testing at Maralinga, South Australia in the 1950's and migrated southwards to a mission settlement. Becky is married to a man from Spinifex Country, has one child and lives with her extended family between remote South and Western Australia. I have known Becky since she was a young girl and now know her as an amazing young mother.

'Kaloti Parmjit'
By Louise Whelan

Artists Caption:
This is a portrait of Kaloti Parmjit taken on the stairs leading to the temple at the Australian Sikh Association in Glenwood, New South Wales. The association is the largest registered body of the Sikhs in the Southern Hemisphere. I have photographed the Sikh community as part of a social documentary project for the State Library of New South Wales. The Sikhs’ ideals are based on equality, sharing, and the oneness of all humankind. The Sikh people I have meet are generous, warm and honest; they treat me like an old friend. The serenity of the temple and its people is most inviting.

'Untitled #1'
By Ahmed Sabra

Artists Caption:
Mohammed is 9 years old and from Gaza, Palestine. He has lived in an orphanage since his father was killed in Gaza after an Israeli air strike in 2008.

'Judy'

By Sally Rabinson

Caption:

Judy Cassab and Charles Blackman are now elderly, frail and suffering dementia, yet their skill, talent and desire to draw continue to burn brightly. Each Wednesday morning these great Australian artists get together at Judy’s home for a drawing session with a nude model. Although now they do not interact much with the world at large, they work contentedly in their own creative worlds. I was privileged to photograph them at one of these sessions.

It was so difficult to pick just a few because they are all so great! you can see the other photographs on the portrait gallery website
